Internet of Things

Solving Internet of Things Challenges with Semantic Web Technologies

Current developments on the Internet are characterised by the wider use of network-enabled devices, such as sensors, mobile phones, and wearables that serve as data providers or actuators, in the context of client applications. Even though real-life objects can finally participate in integrated scenarios, the use of individual and specific interaction mechanisms and data models lead to realising isolated islands of connected devices or to custom solutions that are not reusable. Devices are increasingly network-enabled but rely on heterogeneous network communication mechanisms, use non-standardised interfaces and introduce new data schemas for each individual type of device. This results in a lot of heterogeneity, in the lack of overall integration and in solutions that cannot easily be extended and reused for different application domains.

To this end, the vision of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Web of Things (WoT) is to leverage Internet standards in order to interconnect all types of embedded devices (e.g., patient monitors, medical sensors, congestion monitoring devices, traffic-light controls, temperature sensors, smart meters, etc.) and real-world objects, and thus to make them a part of the Internet and provide overall interoperability. Therefore, IoT and WoT aim to build a future of connected devices that is truly open, flexible, and scalable. The use of semantic Web technologies for the IoT/WoT aims to contribute towards achieving this goal by exploring how existing well-established Semantic Web Technologies can be used to solve some of the challenges that the IoT currently faces.

With this special issue, we aim to discover new ways to embrace the opportunities that Semantic Web technologies offer in terms of data modelling, integration, processing, and provisioning as well as in terms of developing flexible and intelligent system solutions for the Web of Things. In particular we are looking for description approaches, formal models, implementation solutions, use cases, and applications that support a IoT solutions based on semantic web technologies.

Topics of interest

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Semantic frameworks, methods, models, and formats for supporting IoT/WoT solutions;
  • Identifying the essential building blocks for enabling integrated and linked use of data for IoT/WoT;
  • Linked Data principles for WoT data integration;
  • Self-organizing and autonomous WoT systems;
  • Design and development of WoT platforms;
  • Monitoring and data analytics for IoT applications;
  • Real-time data integration and processing;
  • Sensor data processing and integration;
  • Development of WoT clients;
  • Supporting WoT development with Semantic Web technologies;
  • Marketplaces for offering WoT-based applications and services;
  • Application and use case deployment success stories;
  • The connection between IoT and WoT, and the role of semantics therein

Deadline

  • Submission deadline: July 1, 2017 (extended!). Papers submitted before the deadline will be reviewed upon receipt.

Author Guidelines

Submissions shall be made through the Semantic Web journal website at http://www.semantic-web-journal.net. Prospective authors must take notice of the submission guidelines posted at http://www.semantic-web-journal.net/authors. Note that you need to request an account on the website for submitting a paper. Please indicate in the cover letter that it is for the "Internet of Things" special issue.

Submissions are possible in the full research papers category. Papers describing application reports, tools and systems are also welcome, provided that the main contribution still remains an advance of the state of the art with respect to the research perspective.

All manuscripts will be reviewed based on the SWJ open and transparent review policy and will be made available online during the review process.
